Can a symbolic Women’s day celebration really lead to women’s empowerment?

It is bliss to be a woman. A woman is an epitome of love, care, compassion, who has an open heart to embrace the all hardships just to keep her family and loved ones happy. She is one of the beautiful creatures of God who can impart unconditional love even to the stranger. She believes in giving the last drop of water to needy even when it is the only thing that can keep her alive in a secluded desert. But see the irony; the foundation which gives a base to a large structure is ignored by the whole world. Women are denied of the equal rights and opportunities as men. They have to struggle hard to fight for the dignity they deserve. The respect that should come naturally is not even received by demand. So how long does the Women’s day Celebration goes in such a scenario to help in women empowerment.

Yes, Celebration is a part of Women Empowerment.

1. Celebration of being women: 8th March women’s day provides the opportunity to women to feel superior to men. A world where women have always been dominated and deprived of their rights and dignity have a reason to show the male-chauvinistic society the importance of being a woman. This day specially holds importance for those women who are struggling to take a stance against the people who think them as a weaker part of society.

2. Celebration of the Change: It is the day to celebrate and appreciate the efforts made in last years to bring the positive change and development in women’s lives. Don’t forget that the day serves as a common platform where women from all over the world come together. The problems of women are not confined to India but have its roots spread all over the world. And on this day it doesn’t matters whether you are an Indian or an Australian. What matters is that you are a Woman. It is a day to celebrate those women who made a change in society. Celebrations like giving awards for the significant contribution definitely inspire other women to think what a woman can do.

3. Celebration to initiate a change: There is no reason to use the past efforts to celebrate the change. Think beyond it. If you are a woman you have managed to get a proper education and are independent, then take a step ahead to help the women who still consider themselves as a slave to their husbands and the society. The meaning of celebration is not getting happy about being a woman and partying with other female friends or just texting each other Happy Women’s day, but it is about contributing in real sense in the empowerment of women. In the busy lives women tend to forget all these things, but on this day, they can start a welfare campaign. It can be anything from taking a step ahead and adopting a girl child or taking the responsibility to educate a girl child.

4. During these celebrations a lot of new programmes for the empowerment of women are initiated which work as a milestone in the whole process.

5. The Women's day celebrations inform the unware women of their rights and establish the confidence and self-respect in the heart's of those who have lost it.

No, Celebration cannot lead to Women Empowerment

1. Think for a second why women’s day and not a special men’s day: You must have heard of father’s day, mother’s day, children’s day, Valentine’s Day where there is no gender differentiation. But have you ever thought why there is a women’s day and not a men’s day? Definitely because again society is proving that come and see, women are weaker, and they just deserve one day out of the 365 days to feel special. The rest of the 364 days belong to the men. They are the men’s days. Wow, what a way to lead women empowerment. If women consider themselves equal to men or want the similar status in society then make every single day women’s day. They should cherish their self-dignity as human being and their independent entities all 365 days a year.

2. Education is needed for empowerment, not the celebration: The need for women’s empowerment arises from the subordinate position they have been accorded for a long time. A single day celebration cannot make any change in their miserable condition. They should be educated about their rights and privileges to make them an integral part of the society. Education is the base that can lead women to her economic and social rights. Economic independence is a major factor which can contribute in empowering women. Nothing will change by marking a single day as women’s day.

3. Strong measures from government, society and women are required: Tell me what change a single day celebration can make if it is not supported by any kind of measures. Even if some initiatives are started for the betterment of women on 8th March then won’t they require any support on the next day? Will the air of change that will begin on 8th morning will end in 9th morning. And if anything constructive has to be done then why there is a need to wait for 8th March to start it.

4. Dedicating just one day to women can't change the society. It is the mindset of women themselves and the society towards women which has to be changed every day, every minute and every second.

Conclusion

Face the harsh reality and come out of the illusions. Stop fooling that a single day celebration can make any change to the status of women. You don’t need a special day to honor the role models who brought the change in society. They deserve applause but more importantly they expect support to blow the air of change. They don’t expect the honor of one day but they want the honor of women on every coming day. Celebrate women’s day but don’t forget to celebrate being a women everyday.

  • Women’s day celebration could be a symbolic representation of women’s empowerment in a area, but such a celebration cannot lead to any empowerment in particular. Women’s empowerment does not require a celebration to get initiated. Celebrations are always to en joy and share the success stories with our near and dear ones. If we have a get together to discuss an issue or implement any idea among the masses, which would ideally be a meeting or conference and not a celebration.

Women’s empowerment requires the spread of literacy and awareness amongst the masses. The ignorant section of the society should be explained the power of women and the ways to get her upward to compete in this world. Women empowerment doesn’t mean just the equality in terms of reservation at various placement, but the actual acceptance of the importance of women in every sphere of life by every citizen of the nation.

We have adopted many themes from the western culture, and such a celebration is again a part of the same virtue. It is not incorrect to adopt any feature from other cultures, but we need to use our brain before copying anything. Is the women empowerment already a success story in every nook and corner of India to be celebrated? This is what that needs to be thought of before going ahead with the celebration.
