Coalition government impedes the Indian Governance

It is the time of General Elections and again the people are expecting that this time also whichever party wins, it will require the support of other parties to form a coalition government.

Whether it is UPA or NDA, they both have formed the coalition type of governance. There are many people who think that Indian governance is impeded by the coalition set up. Lets us see what the two sides of the picture are:

Yes

• The different groups that come together at the time of forming government later have their own selfserving interests that spoils the structure of the coalition set up.

• If you look back in the past, you can recall the Trinamool Congress Party and the DMK withdrawing support from the UPA coalition.

• There is always a risk of disintegration of coalition set up. A coalition arrangement can lead to the mid-term elections.

• In coalition government, it is not easy to implement the reforms and the economic measures that are must for the development of country. The consensus does not come easily.

• Coalition government is a way through which the leaders of regional parties move towards the fulfillment of their political ambitions.

No

• With the coalition set up, the ruling party cannot follow the authoritarian and quirky ways of governance.

• In the past it has given an end to the authoritarianism or dynasty rule of Congress. Congress was the ruling government for thirty years after the Independence.

• States need more power for better governance and with the coalition government it is possible to keep pace with the ground reality.

• Coalition government calls for adjustment of ideological and self-serving interests to run the country smoothly.

• If there is a single ruling party there is always a fear that a particular group or community can get benefits. But with coalition government both the national as well as provincial interests are taken care of.

Conclusion

Coalition set up helps the country to form a stable government and prevents the situation of re-elections. In a way it reflects the India’s culture and proves the feature ‘’Unity in Diversity”. The only thing that the parties should look for is to give importance to the national interests first and then should fulfill the provincial objectives.
