Can Narendra Modi create Thatcher moments in India?

No one can deny the importance of Margaret Thatcher in changing the economic scenario of Britain. She was the Prime Minister of Britain from 1979-1990. Now India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi is compared to Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. There is no doubt that the Indians are expecting a miracle from Narendra Modi. Can Narendra Modi pass the expectations of people? Can he create Thatcher moments in India?

Yes

• Narendra Modi is assertive, nationalist, authoritarian and dynamic individual. He has the charisma to bring the economic turnaround in the country.

• Gujarat is one of the fastest growing business states that stands firm on economic fronts. Gujarat model speaks a lot about Narendra Modi.

• Narendra Modi and Margaret Thatcher both arise to the political world from grass root levels and are well aware with the problems that a common man faces in real life. Thatcher is a lower middle class grocer’s daughter.

• Thatcher inherited almost a finished economy in Britain and even Narendra Modi has inherited the economy that is facing the problems of slow growth, higher CAD and high inflationary pressures.

• Thatcher stood firm on her grounds and brought the change. Modi is no different as he invited Nawaz Sharif on swearing-in ceremony. He will focus on reduced state involvement and will work on centre-state relationship.

No

• Expecting Thatcher moments from Modi is unrealistic as India is more of a socialist country.

• Thatcher brought a change in Britain which has a very different structure from India. It is not complex or diverse as India.

• Thatcher built the constituency for reform on various parameters like privatization, deregulation etc which is not visible in the Modi’s case.

• One of the biggest differences in Modi’s case and Thatcher case is of expectations from country’s residents. There was a great deal of skepticism when Thatcher became Prime Minster. However, expectations are quite high from Modi.

• Institutional Constraints will affect all the plans of Modi. As of now, for at least one year, the opposition party Congress will still have a strong hold in the upper house of the Parliament.

Conclusion

Narendra Modi is the man selected by the people of India with a hope that he has the potential to deal with the problems of low growth, high inflation and joblessness. Luckily, he sworn for the post at the right time when there are signs of inflation under control and economic growth is likely to see a positive turnaround. As of now, Modi will focus more on manufacturing and infrastructure that in no way resembles a Thatcherite work model.

  • I think yes he has the ability to introduce transformation in India. We can see his work in Gujarat, ever fastest grew state. But every individual has its own abilities, the way he performed is also differs from person to person.Thatcher has boost up economics of England but as we all know this there is mark difference between England and India. India is a big democratic country where to make whole system to work every single element of the system should be free from corruption. So, to make boost in economics of India, he has to make the system corruption free, then only he can make changes like Thatcher.

  • Though Margaret Thatcher as a female prime minister had done a lot .she upraise the condition of Britain from the condition when it was known as a 'sick man of Europe' but in India condition is quite different .Here there is everything but it was not used in a correct way because in India politics is corrupted .Narendra Modi has to remove corruption from politics and he has to decrease the unemployment ,the inflation and it is correct that at that time their future was in balance and today's our future is also in balance so at some point we can say that Narendra Modi create Thatcher moments in India

  • Why to compare Narendra Modi with Margaret Thatcher. Every person has his own individuality. This individualising feature differentiates one person from the other and makes one unique. Thatcher ha her own traits which helped her to rise with great zeal in England.

Neither the country, not the circumstances stand the same for Thatcher and Modi. What Modi can do, and what he will perform, is his own unique way of thinking and implementation. Undoubtedly there is no other country like India to have unity in diversity, in the whole world. The biggest democratic nation in the world need to be handles in a different way in comparison to England’s economic status at the time of Thatcher.

Modi needs to face varied opinions and views from the different states and religions of India, and have to regulate without offending any of them. The economy is downsizing, with high corruption rate in the country which is eating the nation like a pest. Repairing a shattered economy is a lot more easier than getting the corrupt economy back on to the track.

Hence, it would be better if we don’t compare or expect any similar movement from Narendra Modi, by comparing him with anyone on this universe. It would be fair enough to wait and watch his steps and movements and let him work without stress to have an effective governance.
