Is PM Modi right in using Hindi for diplomatic talks?

The new Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making headlines for all the good reasons. Again he did something out of line that his predecessors failed to do. He is holding all his diplomatic conversations in Hindi. He used Hindi as a medium of conversation while speaking to the leaders who came from all the SAARC nations. It is not that Modi is not conversant with English; the only thing is he wants to stick to his national language for diplomatic talks. IS PM Modi right in using Hindi for diplomatic talks?

Yes

• In the past only two great personalities did so. One Dayananda Saraswati and second Mahatma Gandhi. Now Modi is a part of the prestigious group.

• Language is the medium to reflect the progress of our culture and the use of Hindi will strongly reflect the growing Indian culture.

• It is must to stick to the national language to assert India’s national identity. After all, the other nations to use their national language.

• The use of Hindi as a medium for conversation will convey the world that India don’t follows the western universalism blindly.

• Investing efforts and emotion into national language will encourage the original works of India and there will be more demand of conversion of foreign work into local language, ultimately creating jobs in India.

• The respect for own nation and culture starts from within the country. If PM will use it, it will have a positive impact on the residents of India.

• It can be called as the start of India on the road of becoming super power. As people learn French, tomorrow they will learn Hindi.

No

• PM Modi will use the interpreter where he himself can use the English language for the conversation. It doesn’t make sense to assign the work to interpreter when he can do it.

• In the process of interpretation, the assertiveness, articulation and the tone of PM Modi will lose its meaning.

• English is assigned as the unofficial lingua franca in South Asia. English itself is called the language of diplomacy.

• The diplomatic talks with SAARC are global matter where the use of English makes the process easy.

• The use of English is just not about the diplomatic conversation, but it is also about connecting with the local participants in the country who cannot speak Hindi.

• The use of Hindi can connect with the damaging Hindu chauvinism of the mid-1060s that led to the violence problems in Tamil Nadu.

Conclusion

The use of Hindi language for diplomatic talks clearly shows that PM Modi is on his way to lead the country in the most impressive way. He is not under a colonial shadow of English communication. English should be used as a second language. It should not be kept at par with Hindi. If the people are rooted in their own culture, they will grow. The use of Hindi for diplomatic talks is a good start by PM Modi as he has brought the culture back at the first place in India.

  • According To Me, PM Modi is wrong on his part, if he uses Hindi for diplomatic talks... Because, there are many indians who don't even understand Hindi.... So, rather than, going out and using Hindi Words... PM Modi should first promote Hindi in the country itself...

  • i think it is not right way to bring change in language for english , to be honest i will say that people who are modi follower will pay less interest in other language inspite he is pm so he may have different opinion. unaware of languages makes unemployment for this you have to extend you environment so hindi should not use if it has not much importance to succes

  • According to me pm narendra modi is more influential when he delivers his speech in hindi and doing conversion in hindi. This is good for country . It might influence some people who live in places like banglore , chennai, mumbai etc to speak hindi more than their mother tongue. But in india people thing having knowlege of english would help them to get job b/c of this they give first preference to english rather than in hindi. But we should appreciate pm .

  • yes,It is a good decision by modi to save our national language hindi, now a days people don't use hindi they are just following what the western people are doing....if you don't love your culture and language then how can we expect other people to love our nation.we should create an example by knowing hindi much better than english so that our culture can grow and as in ancient period "sanskrit" created a huge impact all over the world,so we should make our nation superior ,so that others follow us.

  • Well everybody is proud of their mother tongue and national language and as long as the person next to you able to understand you you should talk in your mother tongue. But their is no point in using a language which person next to you don't understand at all.He/She may get it via translator but it will only create a mess.English is globally accepted language for international talk. So I think PM Modi should avoid use of Hindi for diplomatic talks.

  • as narendra modi bring india on the path to become the super power so why use western language to interpret, its better 2 spread our culture glabally, all over the world people learn german , french and other language nw world have 2 learn hindi.if the pm speaks hindi . it will have create awareness among indians who does nt know hindi .as pm used interpretor to convert hindi to english that shows that india come first then other contries.so its a better start we should appreciate it .it is second time after atal bihari vajpayi read his speech in hindi in un millenium summit to show the boldness of india that it is the india that cant follow other countries language.

  • It is highly appreciable that he presents our National language with such a dignity internationally. His quality to promote our national language is admirable. Modi is a confident personality, who can cover up all his weakness with his confident jesters and make the conversation more bold and acceptable in a convincing manner.

It is good to project our opinions and views in the language we are more conversant, avoiding any loopholes in the choice of words. Hindi being a more conversant medium, it is fair for him to use the language, engaging an appropriate interpreter who can deliver his words without any amendment. But, in case Modi being literate and good enough in his fluency of English, he could have taken the conversation in English himself.

As Hindi is our official language, English is an international medium of communication which also need to be respected. Being well-verse with the language, still avoiding it to be used as medium of conversation shows a bit of arrogance in his jester.

Still, it requires guts and ample confidence being at the post of PM, to deliver his thoughts in his own national language and heading for an interpreter instead of feeling shy and looking down upon self for not using the common mode of communication. With such a move internationally, Modi definitely should be appreciated.

  • 70% of Indians are not able to understand Hindi. Most of the states people are studying as a part of curriculum but seems they are not conversant. So I feel a global language is better to have diplomatic talks.
