Great Scott!: Battle Of Wills And More For Scottish Independence

Great Scott!: Battle Of Wills And More For Scottish Independence

Scotland remains with the UK, says the verdict following the counting of the votes. For Better Together, it cannot get better than this. For Scottish Independence, this is the end (at least for now). J. K. Rowling must be celebrating(her millions went to the Better Together campaigners for the cause) while Andy Murray will have to swallow his disappointment at the outcome of the vote. Even then, there is some consolation for the Scottish Independence- look how close the tie was. With 54 in favour of remain with the UK and 46 against it, according to some estimates, the tally for the final council (or is it the last bastion)namely The Highland was 52.9% saying No to 47% saying Yes. For Better Together, it was a near thing. Another point in the favour of the freedom fighters is the UK concession in the form of a package for the Scots ( a promise that is the source of heated debate in the British parliament already).

Troublemakers and rabble rousers, say Better Together campaigners but Scottish Independence has remained a dream and a mission for many years now. Given the hight taxation regime of the UK, it is no wonder that Alex Salmond got his voice across and convinced many (if not all) about the need for upholding the cause. Salmond conceded defeat following results of the referendum and went on to congratulate the winning party. David Cameron hailed the victory of the Better Together campaigners and went on to celebrate this by declaring his happiness that Britain remains undivided.

Considering the central role played by the Britishers in the break up of India into 2 halves leading to the state of Pakistan, it is not surprising that they too faced the same situation years later on the home turf. After all, what goes around comes around. For non-believers in karma, another angle is to look at the economic impact. With the separation of the two, there may have been impact on other countries, including India. Now UK will have to work hard for the upliftment of the Scots or risk the revival of the independence movement again, say some experts.

In the Alex versus Alistair confrontation, the “Better” together man won. For those betting otherwise, the results are now there for all to see. The No versus Yes Scottish question had been the subject of lively TV debates between Salmond and Darling. Eventually Alistair's cause turned out to be the darling of the Scottish for now. The stimulus package is the next big Scottish question. Maybe Rowling's millions could help there too.

If not, there are always enough Scottish celebrities to join hands and give voice to their concerns. Alistair Darling has been quoted as saying the day was a “momentous day not only for Scotland but for the United Kingdom as a whole".
How far this is true only time can tell. Edinburgh voted an overwhelming No for 61% so it will not be too hard to convince.

The north-south divide was never any more apparent than it was in Scotland when North Lanarkshire voted 51% yes and South Lanarkshire voted 55% no. This is a victory for the No, but it is not a resounding victory. Scottish independence campaigners can take heart from this. For the Better Together campaigners, supporters are firmly announcing the better man (or is it woman?) won. One hopes that the outcome has maximum benefit for all. If not, there's always Round Two. Murray can lead the game the next time around.
