Williams Wins: Serena Clinches WTA Gold

US ace tennis player Serena Williams has just defeated Romanian star Simona Halep to win the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Women’s Single Title in Singapore. She won the USD 2.05 million price money and the Billie Jean King Trophy. This is a major triumph for Serena who had been unable to play at the Beijing Open due to a knee injury. This is the third consecutive win by Serena as far as the WTA Finals are concerned. This is the first time any player has accomplished this feat other than Monica Seles in the year 1990-1992. Williams had won the Billie Jean King Trophy 4 times previously. She is set to finish this year with a world number 1 ranking.

Serena said she knew she had to take the game a notch up because Halep was playing. She said “Knowing that she has the ability and the capability to play so well, I knew that I had to step up my game. I knew that I had to play a lot better, so I obviously was expecting a much better player than I was in the earlier rounds.” Williams had a worthy contender in Halep who pushed hard till the end. Having lost to Simona in an earlier match, Serena was ready for her this time. She won 8 straight games to equal Halep’s winning run at the previous match. The two players seemed equally matched till Serena took it up to herself to push even harder.

“She was playing so well, like she did the last time we played,” she said, “and I literally was on this side of the court, and I just laughed. I was like, ‘Serena, you have nothing to lose — just relax!’ And then once I relaxed, I just started playing better and making my shots.” Williams worked her talent to hit some amazing and powerful strokes event trying a high swinging forehand volley which was far from Halep’s reach. Serena won the Bille Jean King Trophy which was named after the tennis legend who played the first edition of the match in Singapore.

Clearly, for Serena records are meant to be broken. This is her third straight year and an incredible season which had 7 titles, a 52-8 singles record and a US Open Victory for her 18th Grand Slam. She has been number 1 throughout the year, ranking wise.“I never really talk about my goals” she says, “Thank God because if I mentioned them last year, I would’ve been sorely disappointed with my year this year. It was really up and down,” she said of 2014 adding: “I’m glad I came and I was able to end well. So I think that was important. It’s not how you start; it’s how you finish, right?” About how WTA players play, Williams said. “We play and give our all for everything.”
