1. What is Nautical Science?

Nautical science refers to the basic knowledge which is required to safely navigate and operate a ship. The subjects include navigation and seamanship. Seamanship is the basic operation of shipboard equipment and tools.

About the course

The three year B.SC Nautical Science is a course which is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, which falls under the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. The three year B.SC course is strictly residential.

2. Is there a difference between marine engineering and nautical science?

Yes, there is a difference between marine engineering and nautical science.

Marine engineering makes an individual a ship's engineer whereas nautical science trains a person to become a deck officer.

Marine engineering is all about machinery items on ships, boats or yachts, whereas Nautical science imparts nautical technology knowledge which is important for a deck officer on board.

3. Which are the colleges that a provide a B.SC. Course in Nautical Science?

a) Academy of Maritime Education and Training, Karnataka
b) Vels University, Chennai
c) HIMT College, Chennai
d) GMK Institute of Marine Science and Technology, Chennai

4. What is the eligibility for a B.SC course in Nautical Science?

A candidate should pass 10+2 in the Science stream with Physics, Maths and Chemistry (PMC) and should have obtained 60% of marks. He/She should have obtained a minimum of 50% of marks at 10th or 12th standard. Candidates should be between 17-25 years of age at the time of commencement of the course.

5. What is the duration of the course?

The course is a three year course and the program is divided into six semester.

6. What is the admission process?

An entrance test is conducted which is followed by a psychometric test, medical examination, panel interview and pre – sea training.

7. What is the fees structure required to do a B.SC Nautical Science course?

The fees structure range between Rupees 275000 to 825000.

8. What are the career prospects?

Pursuing a career in B. Sc Nautical Science can land you up as a deck cadet, second officer, chief officer and finally a captain. They can also get employed as a marine engineer, oceanographer, radio officer or nautical surveyors.
