At the inaugural ceremony of the MIFF 2016, veteran wildlife film maker Naresh Bedi has won the V Shantaram Life Time Achievement Award. The award comprising a trophy, shawl and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs (Rs 500,000) is instituted after legendary film maker V Shantaram, who was head of the Films Division in the past. He has made several movies such as Cherubs of the Mist which showcase the beauty and richness of wildlife.

Indian activist and lawyer Henri Tiphagne has won the Amnesty International Human Rights Award 2016 and he will be honored for his exceptional commitment to human rights. Cash award is being conferred by Amnesty Germany’s foundation, Stiftung Menschenrechte, Förderstiftung Amnesty.

▼ Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously [01-27-16]
Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami of the Special Forces who was killed while taking part in end to end operations in J &K has received the Ashok Chakra posthumously. This country’s highest peacetime gallantry award was bestowed by President Pranab Mukherjee on his widow Bhavna Goswami on Republic Day. He not only eliminated terrorists but also assisted in evacuation of wounded colleagues before succumbing to his injuries.

▼ J. K. Rowling receives PEN/Allen Foundation Literary Service Award [01-27-16]
Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling has received the PEN ALLEN Foundation Literary Service Award. She will be receiving the award at the May 16th literary and human rights group annual spring gala. Previous winners of this award include Tim Stoppard, Salman Rushdie and Toni Morrison. PEN has awarded the honour to Rowling for free expression and her two charitable trusts Volant and Lumos. PEN will also honour CEO Michael Pietsch of Hachette Book Group, a US publisher of Rowling’s detective novels under the pen name Robert Galbraith.

Ankita Anand on 14th January 2016 won the European Commission prestigious Lorenzo Natali Media Prize in 2015 in Asia and Pacific amateur category. She has earned the prize for a young woman’s story of facing the diktat of khap panchayats in Haryana with the title Stirrings Beneath the Peepul published in the journal The Equator Linel. Arison Tamfu editor of the Cameron Journal has won the Lorenzo Natali Grand Prize for critical investigative report on the manner in which the UN Climate change negotiations called on nations to make the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Organized by the European Commission’s DG for International Cooperation and Development since 1992. The Prize is divided into two distinct categories- amateur and professional journalism.

▼ India’s Anuradha Roy wins the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2016 [01-18-16]
India’s Anuradha Roy has won the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2016 for her novel Sleeping on Jupiter. This deals with the subject of violence against women. At the Fairway Galle Literary Festival in Galle, Sri Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghe presented her with the rpize. This novel has been chosen on account of elegance, readability and flair. Other authors and novels in contention for this year’s prize were: Akhil Sharma (Family Life); K.R. Meera (Hangwoman) [translated by J. Devika]; Mirza Waheed (The Book of Gold Leaves), Neel Mukherjee (The Lives of Others) and Raj Kamal Jha (She Will Build Him A City).

The IIT-BHU's decision to dis-empanel social activist , founder of Asha Trust and 2002 Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey from the list of its guest faculty was based on his taking part in "unwanted activities", and the activist claims RSS is behind his ouster. Pandey was visiting faculty in the department of mechanical engineering. The banned documentary Nirbhaya was screened by him and he also took part in Naxal activities according to BHU administration.

British writer Kate Atkinson on 4th January 2016 won the novel of the year prize at Costa Book Awards 2015. She has won for the second time in 3 years. She won the award for A God in Ruins, a story of war and its aftermath. With this, she became the first author to receive the Costa novel prize three times: for A God in Ruins in 2016, Life After Life in 2013 and Behind the Scenes at the Museum in 1995.

MD of Hotel Maiyanho in Leicester, Aatin Ashok Anadkat was awarded a British empire medal. MBE was awarded to Rekha Mehr and Ayesha Hazarika.
