Lord Gulam Noon, one of UK’s most well known Indian origin peers and curry king of the UK has died at the age of 79 on 27th October 2015. Mumbai-origin Lord Noon founded the 200-million pound Noon Products business which is credited with Britain developing a taste for curry and chicken tikka masala. He succumbed to liver cancer and was known as the first Curry King in the UK. Lord Noon was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award by the Opposition in February this year.

▼ Well known Bengali actor Pijush Ganguly passes away [10-26-15]
Veteran Bengali actor Pijush Ganguly succumbed to multiple organ failure after an accident where he was critically injured on 25th October 2015. He was 50 years of age at the time of his death. Known for films such as ‘Gaynar Baksho,’ (Aparna Sen), ‘Byomkesh Bakshi,’ (Anjan Dutta) ‘Autograph,’ (Srijit Mukherjee) and ‘Anshumaner Chhabi,’ (Atanu Ghosh), the actor was famous in the industry. CM Mamata Banerjee condoled his demise.

▼ Renowned marine biologist Syed Zahoor passes away [10-23-15]
Acclaimed marine biologist Syed Zahoor Qasim passed away on October 20, 2015 in New Delhi at the age of 88. He was the father of Polar Biology in India. He also participated in the first Indian expedition to Antarctica in 1981-1982. Following the first expedition, he organised and guided the remaining 7 expeditions till 1988 and contributed in areas such as environmental pollution, estuarine ecology and marine culture. He has close to 200 original research papers in national and international journals to his credit. He has been awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Union Government. An erstwhile Planning Commission member and served as VC of Jamia Millia Islamia University.

Senior filmmaker Kikkeri Shamanna Lakshminarasimha Swamy, also known as KSL Swamy, died on 20 October 2015 at 77. He was also a playback singer, actor and producer. He started his career by helping G. V. Iyer and M. R. Vittal and debuted as an independent film director with the 1966 film, Thoogudeepa. His 1989 film Jamboo Savari won a National Award. He had directed over 37 films. He is also a Padma Bhutan awardee.

He was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1979-1983, Foreign Secretary from 1983-1989, Leader of House of Commons from 1989-1990 and Deputy PM from 1989-1990.

Her first movie was Maalaiyitta Mangai and she has won several awards such as National Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1989. The iconic actress was widely popular.

Well known music director Ravindra Jain who overcame blindness to create soulful music for the Indian film industry including movies like Chitchor and Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, died on Friday of multiple organ failure at the age of 71. Jain was known for his collaboration with singer K. J. Yesudas for melodies such as Oo goriya re, Beeti hui raat ki, Gori tera gaon and Jab deep jale aana. The music director began his career with a Mohammad Rafi song which was not released. He composed music for several hit films like Geeta Gata Chal and Vivah. He also composed music for TV serials.

Famous flautist N. Ramani succumbed to cancer on 9th October 2015 at the age of 82 and is survived by son R. Thiyagaran who is also a flautist as is grandson Atul Kumar. Ramani was born in Tiruvarur, the birthplace of Carnatic Trinity in the 1930s and learned the art from Azhiyur Narayanasami Iyer, his maternal grandfather. Ramani won the the Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy. An experimenter, Ramani combined the Venu, Veena and Violin. Ramani also performed jugalbandhis with Hariprasad Chaurasia, M.S. Gopalakrishnan, N. Rajam, Pandit Viswamohan Bhat and U. Srinivas.
