Though a career in creative writing does not require any formal education, still students having educational background in English Literature, Journalism, Mass media and Communication have an advantage with a flair for creative writing.

There are some institutes that offer short term courses (1year) in creative writing. Few others make this as an optional subject with bachelors and masters degree. Some universities also conduct distant education courses in creative writing like:

- Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)
- Karnataka State Open University
- U.P. Rajarshi Tandon Open University etc.

The students interested in creative writing are expected to have few skills like:

- Flair for writing with imagination
- Good observation and creativity
- Sound vocabulary and Comprehension skills
- Sound knowledge of grammar and ability of expression with rich and impressive words
- Think differently and out of the box
- Innovative presentation skills
- Ability to research different topics
- Good communication skills
- Last but not the least is determination and hard-work
