- The impeller in centrifugal pump is surrounded by an annular space of the diffuser. In this case, if the annular is without the vanes, then it is called as
vanless diffuser
and if the diffuser has a set of guide vanes then it is called as
vaned diffuser
. A proper direction is given by the set of guide vanes in the vaned diffuser.
- The constant angular momentum in free vortex leads to large sized diffuser having low energy conversion efficiency. But these are economical for wide range of applications.
- These diffusers are free from blade stalling and shock waves formation. Therefore
vaneless diffusers are suitable only for low pressure rise
- But vaneless diffusers are not suitable for aeronautical applications.
