Micrometer and vernier calipers are used to measure dimensions of an object such as length, depth etc. They are used to magnify small measurements.

Autocollimator is an optical instrument and is used to measure angular tilts. It is also used for testing alignment, straightness and flatness of a surface. An electronic detector is used to measure the deflection of the mirrored image obtained when an image is projected on the target mirror. Angle of 0.5 arc second can be measured by using a visual autocollimator. Electronic autocollimator is typically calibrated to measure the actual mirror angle.

Monitoring of angular movements and checking of repeated angular positions is done with the help of electronic and digital autocollimators.

Autocollimators are used to align components and measure deflections in mechanical or optical systems. Air currents between autocollimator and target mirror cause fluctuations in autocollimator readings. Accuracy of the readings is also affected by flatness and reflectivity of the target mirror.
