- Depending upon the mechanical arrangement between links, kinematic pairs are divided into self closed pairs or forced closed pairs.
- If two links of a pair are not held mechanically while transmitting relative motion between them, then they are called as force closed pairs, unclosed pairs or open pairs.
- The contact between two links of cam and follower is maintained due to force of gravity or spring force and are not mechanically connected.
