Can i know what is best carbon and silicon for gray iron. And how to calculate carbon and silicon percentage?I mean if i melting 400kg how many need carbon and how to calculat.

    - Grey cast iron has graphitic microstructure. Gray cast iron consists of 2.4 to 3.8% carbon, 1.2 to 3.5% of silicon, 0.5 to 1.0% of manganese, 0.06 to 0.12% of sulphur.

    - Graphite ferrite mixture in the microstructure of gray cast iron is soft and weak. The strength and hardness of ferrite mixture increases, if carbide content increases.

    - Gray cast iron has high thermal point and hence has high ability to withstand shocks.

    - It has low melting point (1150° C to 1250° C) than steel. They require simple furnaces such as pit furnace, cupola, etc. Impurities can be controlled as they are not critical as observed in steel.

    - It has high compressive strength of 110 to 350 N/mm2. It is 3 to 5 times greater than tensile strength.
