The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy on Dec 8 commemorated the 70th anniversary of the recovery of the Xisha and Nansha Islands, the Chinese names of Paracel and Spratly islands in the SCS.
According to the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation, China in November and December 1946 designated officials to proceed to the islands by four warships to take over the islands, illegally occupied by Japan.
China’s claims over almost all of the SCS was contested by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan, which were backed by the United States to assert their claims.
