All the liquids have a tendency to escape the molecules from its free surface called evaporation or vaporisation. When this vaporising liquid is placed in a closed vessel, the vapour molecules get accumulated in the space between free surface and top of the vessel. This accumulated vapour of the liquid exerts partial pressure on the liquid surface called as vapour pressure. If the pressure on liquid is less than or equal to vapour pressure, the liquid starts boiling or vaporize.
