    The diagram shown above is of Pelton turbine.

    As shown in the diagram, the nozzle directs a high-speed stream of water against the buckets or impulse blades. These are mounted on the circumference of runner.

    As Pelton turbine is an impulse type of turbine, it works on the principle of impulse. The momentum of water jet is transferred to the turbine through the runner or wheel. Therefore the work is done by the impulse energy on the turbine in pelton wheel.

    Pelton wheels have only one turbine stage, because of the use of liquid fluids which are incompressible.

    Pelton turbines are best applicable when the available water head is relatively high. In this situation, Pelton turbines are more efficient.
