Different steps involved in magnetic particle test are cleaning the surface, magnetizing the metallic component, application of ferromagnetic powder, observation and inspection and demagnetization. First step includes cleaning the surface of the component. It is then magnetized which is followed by longitudinal, circular and permanent magnet. Probe method is also used and for heavy jobs such as large castings and forgings and bulky fabricated structures.

Dry and wet method are used to apply very fine size of ferromagnetic powder. Due to this method liquid penetrates into the surfaces due to capillary action and defects are easily determined. After this step the component is observed and inspected by using low magnifying lenses.

Finally, the last step includes demagnetization. In this method magnetization of materials is removed before using them for different applications. There are different methods to eliminate magnetism. If the component is heated to curie temperature , it gets demagnetized.

Reversing the flow of current through the component also demagnetizes the component. Magnetic particle test method is portable and easy to handle.
