The results obtained in tensile test are represented graphically in the form of stress-strain curve. This stress-strain curve can be used to identify the different properties of a metal regarding its elastic limit, the point of ultimate tensile stress i.e. the point at which maximum stress is observed on the metal.

At point B metal reaches the elastic limit. At this point Hooke's law is not obeyed even if the metal is elastic. Beyond point B plastic deformation starts in the metal. Up to elastic limit if the metal is stressed it can regain its original shape and size even after removal of load.
