The capability of an equipment or system to function satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without any interruption of external disturbances is known as 'Electromagnetic compatibility'. There are two types of EMC compliance testing. They are multiple burst & multiple stroke lightning and high intensity radiated field (HIRF) testing.

Basically, HIRF result from high-power radio frequency transmitters, which include radio & television stations,RADAR and the satellite up-link transmitters.

The maximum threat level is stipulated up to 7200 volts per meter because this level gives an assurance that the system equipment operates at a safe level without any kind of interruption, malfunctioning or failure.
