Properties of different metals can be evaluated using a mechanical test known as tensile test. Tensile test is used to collect data regarding strength and ductility of materials under uniaxial tensile forces. Tensile test is based on the principle that when a sample is tested it deforms first elastically and then plastically and later on fractures into two pieces. During this test a stress strain curve is obtained which determines various properties such as elastic limit, yield point, breaking stress, ultimate tensile strength etc.

According to Hooke's law, stress is directly proportional to strain and holds upto point A in the stress strain curve shown. This point A is called as limit of proportionality. Up to this point the metal can regain its original shape and size even after the applied load is removed.
