IAU's definition of planet - Science & Technology

Q.  According to IAU's definition of planet ,”A planet is a body that orbits the Sun, is massive enough for its own gravity to make it round, and has "cleared its neighborhood" of smaller objects around its orbit.” Which criteria is not fulfilled by pluto?

a. It needs to be in orbit around the Sun
b. It needs to have enough gravity to pull itself into a round shape
c. It needs to have “cleared the neighborhood” of its orbit
d. Both b and c

ANSWER: It needs to have “cleared the neighborhood” of its orbit

As planets form, they become the dominant gravitational body in their orbit in the Solar System. As they interact with other, smaller objects, they either consume them, or sling them away with their gravity. There are still many objects with similar size and mass to Pluto jostling around in its orbit. And until Pluto crashes into many of them and gains mass, it will remain a dwarf planet.
