The process in which stream of molten metal is disintegrated into fine particles by means of compressed air, inert gas or water is called as atomization. This process is used to prepare aluminium, lead, zinc, noble elements, and super alloys.

D.P.G process is used for electronic framework. Temperature of metals can be properly controlled in this method. It is possible to obtain suitable powders due to diameter of tundish hole, speed of rotation and the shape of knives. Formation of thin oxide film on particles and freezing of metals on knives are the drawbacks of D.P.G process.

In Mannesmann process, stream of high carbon liquid iron is atomized by passing it through high pressure air jet. This method saves material and results in less tube fractures due to less number of draws during drawings. This method is used to manufacture copper rods, rods and strips.

Dissolved gas atomization method introduces molten metal saturated with soluble gas like hydrogen into vacuum chamber through an orifice under pressure. After that pressurized liquid explode into fine particles. This method is used to prepare superalloys such as cobalt alloys, titanium alloys etc. This method is used to produce aluminium powder which is used as solid rocket fuel.

The powder obtained in rotating electrodes atomization method is homogeneous and contamination free. This process produces spherical solid particles of fine dendrite structure. This process is used in nuclear, electronic and aerospace.
