India is the second largest producer of silk in the world after China. About 97% of the raw silk comes from five Indian states, namely, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Mulberry accounts for 79 per cent 7, Tasar 7.3 per cent 7, Eri 13.2 per cent and Muga 0.5 per of the total raw silk production. Karnataka is leading in silk production in the country. In Assam, three different types of silk are produced, collectively called Assam silk: Muga, Eri and Pat silk. Muga silk is the product of the silkworm Antheraea assamensis endemic to Assam.
