Both the centrifugal as well as the axial flow compressors are used to give a steady flow of pressurized air. These are the true steady flow compressors.
The true steady flow compressors are also called as turbo-compressors. These are power absorbing machines.
Both centrifugal and axial flow compressors operate on the air or gas. Both the compressors produce a change in momentum of the working fluid on the expense of external work supplied which results into increase in pressure on the working fluid.
Therefore, The basic principle of operation of axial flow compressor is same as that of the centrifugal compressor.
