- The award is for recognising contribution towards enriching art forms.
- In 2015, the honour was conferred upon Kathak dance artist Pandit Birju Maharaj.
- Other recipients of the award include Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Abdul Halleem Jaffar kKhan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan.
- Award carries a prize of INR 50,000 and a memento and citation.
