Contact and non-contact type of instruments are used for measurement purpose. In contact type of instruments, plunger or sensor has contact with the measuring unit. Non-contact type of instruments have no actual contact with the instruments to be measured.

Micrometer is a contact type precision measuring instrument. The component to be measured is placed between spindle space and anvil face. The component can be measured only if the component is trapped between these surfaces and the rachet turned in clockwise direction makes a clicking noise indicating that the rachet cannot be tightened anymore. After this the component can be measured.

Pyrometer and stroboscope are non-contact type of instruments. A pyrometer measures temperature of a surface using remote-sensing thermometer. Temperature above 1200° C is measured using a radiation pyrometer. Stroboscope measures velocity, revolutions and frequency of moving or rotating components.
