- Shear stress energy theory is called as distortion theory or
Von Mises theory.
- According to this theory, material subjected to complex stresses fail, when total strain energy stored in it exceeds total strain energy caused due to uniaxial stress at elastic point.
- Total strain energy is the sum of volumetric strain energy and shear strain energy. Volumetric strain energy causes changes in volume and shear strain energy causes change in shape of the body.
