In SMPS, there are two types of EMI transmission – Radiated & conducted noise. Conducted noise is categorized into differential mode noise & common mode noise.

The noise which occurs due to magnetic coupling and is measured between each power line and ground, is regarded as ' Differential mode noise'. It is also renowned as 'Normal-mode noise' or 'Transverse mode noise'.

On the contrary, common mode noise is measured between Line and ground. It occurs due to stray capacitance & may be coupled through high frequency transformer or along the paths possessing parasitic or stray capacitance.
