- The flatness of a surface is tested by using an optical flat.
- A fringe pattern is observed if an optical flat is placed on a metal surface, depending upon the nature of the surface in contact.
- The pitch of bands formed depend upon the angle of wedge and if the angle of wedge increases, pitch of bands increases.
- The surface is assumed to be concave, if the fringes obtained move towards the centre and when they move away from the centre, the surface is convex.
