    X+x+18=40
    Then x=11

    Let the 2 pieces be of length (x) ft and (40-x) ft. Let the piece that is 18ft longer be (40-x), so the other piece becomes (x-18)ft.
    Now,
    40-x =x-18
    2x=58
    X=29
    (40-x)= 40-29 = 11 ft
