    - Synthesis involves design of various machine components considering its size, shape and materials and also the proper arrangement of components so that the machine performs the desired task.

    - Kinetics deals with inertia forces caused due to combined effect of mass and motion of parts.

    - Study of relative motion between machine parts is called as kinematics. It deals with position, displacement, rotation, speed, acceleration and velocity of the moving parts.

    - Relative motion between various parts of piston can be determined if length of parts and crank speed is known.
