The basic function of a pump is to lift a quantity of liquid from a low level to high level or to transfer it from one place to another place. To carry out these duties by a pump, it has to provide energy to lift the liquid to required height against the force of gravity and to the fluid resistance to flow of the liquid through the pipe and the pump itself.

Therefore, a device which transfers the input mechanical of a motor or of an engine into pressure energy or kinetic energy or both of a fluid is called as pump.

Pump is a mechanical device which converts mechanical energy into hydraulic energy of a fluid.
