Gross errors, systematic errors and random errors are different errors in measurement.

Gross errors occur due to human mistakes and are caused due to use of wrong instruments, mistakes in computation. These errors can be avoided by selecting and setting the instrument properly or by taking number of readings at different times and under different conditions.

Systematic errors are caused due to nonlinearity or change in sensitivity. Instrument errors, environmental errors, observational errors, random errors and operational errors are different types of systematic errors.

Random errors are caused due to vibrations, hysteresis, backlash in instruments etc. Random errors are accidental errors and vary in magnitude and direction.

Environmental error is a systematic error caused due to factors such as magnetic or electrostatic fields, pressure, temperature etc. which are external to the measuring device.
