- To mark the day and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, UNESCO instituted a prize in 1995 for promotion of tolerance and non-violence.

- In 2016, the prize was awarded to Federal Research and Methodological Centre for Tolerance Psychology and Education of Russia
