South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk ran the fastest single lap in history to win the 400m gold medal in 43.03 seconds in the Rio Olympics.
  • He broke Michael Johnson’s 17 year strong world record while doing so
  • Johnson had achieved a 1999 mark of 43.18 seconds
  • South African also spoilt Kirani James chance of gold; the 2012 champion Hames took silver in 43.76
  • LaShawn Merritt of the US, the 2008 Olympic champion claimed brazen in 43.85, marking the first time the top three have run under 44 seconds in a one lap Olympic final.
