The energy transfer between the fluid and machine is only due to change in momentum caused by tangential component of velocity.
In case of turbines, the initial velocity of flowing fluid is higher than its final velocity as energy gets converted into turbine rotation.
Therefore, for the energy transfer between fluid and machine, the momentum at the inlet of turbine is greater than the momentum at the exit of turbine.
If, ((V
w
1
x u
1
) > (V
w
2
x u
2
)) then machine is called as turbine.
