In hydraulic power plant, the water stored in dam provides necessary potential energy to the turbine. But while transferring this potential energy to the turbine, some of the energy gets lost due to friction in penstock. Thus the head of water available at the turbine is less than the actual head available in the dam.

The head of water available at turbine inlet in hydro-electric power plant is called as net head.

Net head is the difference between gross head and frictional head in penstock.

    Therefore,
Net head = (Gross Head) – (Frictional Head)
