Temperature lower than -157° C is called as cryogenic temperature. Different types of metals used for low temperature applications are plain carbon steel, austenitic stainless steel, aluminum lithium steel and nickel base steels.

The property of metals to resist fractures in presence of metallurgical notch is called as notch toughness. Impact test is used to measure this notch toughness.

Ductility and toughness of metals reduces at low temperatures. Low temperature improves fatigue resistance of metals.
