    - Bending moment: The algebraic sum of moment of all forces acting either on left or right side of a section.

    - Two different types of sign conventions are used for bending moment depending upon left and right side of the section and depending upon clockwise and anticlockwise direction.

    - When load is applied on the beam, the shape of it is described by sagging or hogging.

    Sagging bending moment:

    - The concavity produced on the beam section about the centre line when upward force acts on it is called as sagging bending moment.

    - This B.M. is considered as positive B.M., when clockwise moment on left section and anticlockwise moment on right section are considered.

    Hogging bending moment:

    - The concavity produced on the beam section about the centre line when downward force acts on it is called as sagging bending moment.

    - This B.M. is considered as negative B.M., when clockwise moment on left section and anticlockwise moment on right section are considered.
