    Availability can be defined as the probability of operation of an equipment at time 't'. It can also be defined as the ratio of an actual period for which the equipment finds its utility to the total time for which equipment is required to function.

    It provides the platform for integrating the reliability as well as maintainability parameters & hence depends on the number of failure that occur and the way for quick rectification of the faults. Availability is categorized into inherent,achieved and operational availability.

    The probability of the operation of system in a contently manner especially in an ideal environment without any maintenance consideration is termed as an 'Inherent Availability'. It is generally given by,

    Ai = MTBF / ( MTBF + MTTR)

    Achieved availability is nothing but the mean active maintenance downtime due to preventive and breakdown maintenance, while operational availability is equivalent to mean down time.
