- Consider a round body rotating about an axis. It has a dial gauge plunger pressed on its surface. The body is said to be running true if dial gauge plunger has no variations in its readings as the body rotates about its axis.
- The distance between A and B represents, out of true running of a round component at given section and is called runout. By setting the dial plunger normal to the revolving surface runout on external cylindrical surface is measured. The readings on this surface are measured by rotating the cylindrical surface slowly.
