Rankine-Gordon's empirical formula is known as Rankine's formula.
- Crushing load is responsible for the failure of short columns and buckling load is responsible for the failure of long columns.
- The formula used to calculate crippling load is given as
R
c
= σ
c
A / [1 + α (L
e
/ k)
2
]
α is Rankine's constant, σ
c
is the crushing stress, k is the radius of gyration and L
e
is the effective length.
