    - Today networks have grown larger and the number of devices continues to increase. Also increased in mobile computing where devices come and go from network.

    - This has led to the large scale adoption of dynamic IP assignment.

    - There are two protocols are used to support dynamic IP address assignment
    1. BOOTP
    2. DHCP

    - BOOTP is an older protocol and not used much.

    - DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is widely used.

    - The problem with the BOOTP protocol is that the mapping between IP and hardware address is static.

    - The BOOTP protocol still requires a network administrator to configure the server.

    - BOOTP protocol would not work with mobile devices or networks where devices are constantly being added and removed.

    - DHCP protocol is designed to support true dynamic assignment of IP addresses.

    - The DHCP server manages a pool of IP addresses and information about client configuration parameters such as, default gateway, domain name, the name servers, and time servers.
