  • His death was confirmed by the University of Chicago where he was professor emeritus.
  • He was also the father of historian JR McNeill with whom he co-authored “The Human Web: A Bird’s Eye View of World History.”
  • He was the son of theologist and educator John T. McNeill.
  • Educated at the University of Chicago, he also taught there.
  • McNeil was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama in 2010
