Newly released census data also found that of 55.5 million marginal workers available for work in the nation, around 21.9 million or 39.4% are illiterates followed closely by 20.9 million or 37.6% literates bellow matric secondary and 8 million or 14.5% matrics secondary below graduate level. Among 60.7 million non workers seeking availability of jobs in India, a majority constitutes literates below matric secondary level followed by matric-secondary below graduate and illiterate. Between 2001-2011, there was a 59.2 million increase in literate workers of which a majority (20.5 million rise) was reported under the category matric secondary below graduate followed by 16.2 million below matric-secondary and 11 million as graduate and above other than technical degree. The overall data shows that 4.5% of the nation’s population is educated to the point of graduation or above while only 32.6% of the population has not received education till primary school level.
