A leak at a bottom of a full tank can empty it in 8 hrs. An inlet pipe fills it at the rate of 6 litres per minute. The tank is full and inlet is opened and due to the leak it gets empty in 12 hrs. What is the capacity of the tank?

So;
efficiency time. L.C.M
-3 leak. 8 hours. } 24
-2 leak+inlet. 12 hours. }

Now ; (efficiency of inlet pipe) fill a tank with leakage ;

Efficiency of inlet pipe is -2+3=1litre per hour

And; it take time to fill a tank with leakage is
1×time=24;
Time=24 hours

Inlet pipe take 24 hours with leakage to fill a tank.

Now; Alone inlet pipe efficiency is 6 litre per minute without leakage,

So; total capacity of a tank is;
{24 hours}×{6 litre per minutes}
{(24×60) minute}×{6 litre per minute}
1440×6= 8640
So the capacity of a tank is 8640 litre.

Let inlet alone take ''x'' hrs to fill the tank
Now, ( inlet+leak) in 1 hrs= -1/12(emptying)
I.e. 1/x+(-1/8)= -1/12
1/x= -1/12+1/8
1/x = 1/24
X= 24 hrs
1 min = 6liters
(24*60) min = ?

6*60*24= 8640 liters

By inlet tube in 12 hour=4320 lit
Full tank gets empty in 8 hour by leakage and now rest water by inlet pipe takes 4 hour for leakage.
in 4 hour=4320 lit
in 8 hour=4320*2=8640lit.

We consider x and y are time for empty and fillup respectively...
now formulae is....
1/x+1/y=xy/x+y is time for empty(n.b: for simultaneous condition)

so.....1/8+1/y=8y/8+y
y=24
capacity of tank is 24*360=8640 lit
