In question it is mentioned that 1/5 of the girls,this means that there are 5 girls in total,outta which 1 girl participated in an event.....moving on to the next part of the question,1/8 of the boys,same logic applies here too,there are total 8 boys outta which 1 boy participated.Therefore,total no. Of persons = 5 girls + 8 boys = 13.Required fraction = (1girl + 1 boy)/total = 2/13...TADA!
