007 Shaken: DietY's National Email Service Relevant In The Age of Espionage
In the age of espionage and Wiki Leaks, it is only right that the Government of India should work towards creating a national email service for government officials as well as citizens who want to communicate with the government. The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DietY) is crafting a user friendly Indian email service which will be similar to those such as Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail.
The new National Email Service will be made available to the Central and state government employees first and then to the citizens who wish to communicate with the government. The project has been given importance as this is an issue of national security. The aim is to ensure that data transfers and communication systems are efficient and effective in that they are not hacked or broken into by third parties.
The service will also be extremely fast due to enhanced bandwidth and servers will be placed in India. The National Email Service is expected to be ready by November. This email service is part of the Digital India programme conceived by PM Modi.
The new email service will be user friendly and intuitive. It will also be enabled with several smart features. The Daily Mail reports that this Made In India email service will be available in the final phase for Indian citizens to interact and communicate with the government.
Media sources report that the work has been initiated in this direction and the email design and templates for this service will be ready by November. The specifics of the new email service are still being worked out as the templates are currently being finalised. The new template will be given an official look so that it is specified as a tool for serious communication only.
The National Email Service will also possess features such as group SMS and chat apart from closed user groups, according to the Daily Mail. Calenders, task managers as well as bulk SMS facility will also be available in this new service.
Former telecom secretary and current president of NASSCOM, Mr. R. Chandrashekhar has said this new email service will protect and enhance the security of communication from the government and official data, as per the Daily Mail.
The government of India has spent around INR 800 crore for modernising the current National Informatics Centre. With these new initiatives as well, Digital India is set to take wings soon. It will also be a change for the governmental employees to use a more efficient service as the current nic.networking does not facilitate addition of large attachments in emails, according to the Daily Mail. The National Email Service will also promote accountability and enable citizens to share their concerns with the government. This has a lot of value for the progress of India.
