7 tips to write an effective essay for Intelligence Bureau


Intelligence Bureau of India under the home ministry handles all the undercover operations to protect the interest of civilians and upholds peace in the country. The operations of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) are networked throughout the country and are highly supported by latest technology. The activities of IB include threat assessment, counter intelligence, terrorism control and VIP security.

There are various opportunities for the youngsters to explore in the Intelligence Bureau and the recruitment process is carried out both at state and central government levels. The entry level recruitment is usually carried out for the posts of Junior Intelligence Officer (JIO), Personal Assistant and Assistant Central Intelligence Officer (ACIO).

Eligibility for the examination:

The eligibilities vary with the post that candidates apply for. The qualification required for JIO is matriculation with 2 year ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate in computers\ electronics\electrical\communication \ radio technician. Similarly the qualification required for Personal Assistant is 10+2 with proficiency in stenography. And that for an ACIO is graduation with good computer knowledge.

Selection Process:

The written test is common for all the positions which comprises of objective type question paper for 100 marks that tests on General Knowledge, aptitude, reasoning and English language.

The candidates are then put to the second level of screening based on the position applied and the marks allocated range from 50 – 100. A skill test on typing is conducted for applicants of Personal Assistant position and a skill test based on the candidate’s specialization often known as trade test is held for JIO applicants. The applicants for the ACIO are given a descriptive paper on English language which is often an Essay Writing paper.

The third and final level is a personal interview irrespective of the position the candidate appears for.

Essay Writing for ACIO:

The descriptive part of the examination for ACIO tests on the English writing skills and the knowledge on the current affairs of the candidates. This carries a weightage of 50 marks and the time allotted would be 30 -40 minutes. The candidates are expected to write an effective essay with not more than 400 words. Hence a good amount of practice is necessary for the candidates to write short and crisp essays in the limited time slot given. Most often a choice of three topics is given for essay writing that are quite popular and hot at those times. Some examples like,

• India’s space programme
• Causes of corruption in India
• Impact of bifurcation on the development of the state
• Dealing with extremism in a developing country

Tips for writing the essay:

1. Decide on the topic among the options given and attempt on the one which you are confident and interested in.

2. Plan on the points of discussion and list down what all aspects you want to touch up on as the number of words is limited to 400 hundred.

3. Give importance to write an impressive introduction that helps in understanding your opinion about the topic.

4. The body of the essay can be made into points rather than paragraphs to present your view and supportive facts & figures about the topic. This will help you cover more content in fewer points.

5. Summarize the essay with a good conclusion to make the write up a complete one.

6. Use simple language and ensure there are no grammatical and spelling mistakes.

7. Good handwriting will always be an added advantage and hence ensure your presentation is neat and understandable.

All that is expected from the candidates is clear, crisp and concise essay that demonstrates the understanding on the current issues. The commitment to work hard and positive attitude are the two major factors that help a person in achieving the goal and succeed in the competitive world.
